I've been wondering for a while now about how the band divided up the money made from their live show releases from Dick's Picks to now. Did everybody get an equal share? Does Pigpen have anyone who gets his share? Does Donna get a double share because of Keith? Do the original tapers get any money? Did things change with the Rhino contract? Did the band make any release decisions because of where the royalties would go?

No one really answers this question.Way back I also wanted to know what percentage is the bands' take and I was given a book on the music business.W/o being an industry attorney you do not get any answer that would suffice. It is a very complicated formula trickling down from album sales, radio play, road crew cuts, royalty payouts, managers lawyers and accountants, publishing rights, touring and how deep of the touring package does it go.For instance the Dead did have their own travel agency to book their own tours and to also handle outside interests. Overhead cuts into all
profits where you have rehersal space whether rented or owned and plain office space to handle the day to day affairs. To say yes to equal shares might be a little nieve here.Publishing and songwriting credits usually takes the lions share of any of any contracts. It all depends on how the original contract was written. For a well known example Jim Morrison wanted equal shares for all band members of the Doors whether they wrote any words or music. I believe the GD might also have had this type of arrangement.

I think REM or U2, or both have similar arrangements.

Now, one day, now I believe it was on a Tuesday, a man in a checkered double-knit suit drove up in a large El Dorado Cadillac, leased from BOB SPREEN . . .

("Where the freeways meet in Downey!")

. . . And he laid a HUGE, BULGING ENVELOPE right at the corner of BILLY THE MOUNTAIN, that was right where his 'foot' was supposed to be.

Now, BILLY THE MOUNTAIN, he couldn't believe it! All those postcards he'd posed for, for ALL OF THOSE YEARS, and finally, now, AT LAST, his Royalties!

Royalties!
Royalties . . .
Royalties!
Royalty check is in, honey!

Yes, BILLY THE MOUNTAIN was RICH! Yes, and his eyeball-caves, they widened in amazement, and his jaw (which was a cliff), well it dropped thirty feet!

A bunch of dust puffed out! Rocks and boulders hacked up, (hack! hack!) crushing 'The LINCOLN'!

I gave him the money
He acted real funny
He hocked up a rock and
It TOTALLED my car!

Oh, do you
Know any trucks
Might be bound for THE VALLEY?
I don't wanna stand here
All night in this bar
(Dear Lord)

I don't wanna stand here
All night in this bar
(No shit!)

I don't wanna stand here
All night in this bar!

By two o'clock, when the bars are already closed down, BILLY had broken 'THE BIG NEWS' to ETHELL. And with dust and boulders everywhere, BILLY, choked with excitement, announced . . .

"ETHELL, we're going on a VACATION!"

Yes, and they WERE going on a vacation! (Oh, and ETHELL, ETHELL, ETHELL, like every little woman, she of course was very excited! She creaked a little bit, and some old birds flew off of her.) BILLY told ETHELL they were going to . . . Yes! They were going to NEW YORK!

"ETHELL, we're going to . . . New York!"

But first they were gonna stop in LAS VEGAS . . .

It's off to LAS VEGAS
to check out the lounges
Pull a few handles,
And drink a few beers,
(Oh, ETHELL!)

ETHELL, my darling,
you know that I love you!
I'm glad we could have a
Vacation this year!
(Oh, NEET-O!)

Glad we could have a
Vacation this year!

They left that night, crunchin' across the Mojave Desert . . . their voices echoing through the canyons of your minds (POO-AAH!)

"ETHELL, wanna get a cuppa cawfee?"

(Howard Johnson's! Howard Johnson's!
Howard Johnson's! Howard Johnson's!)

"Ahhh! there's a HOWARD JOHNSONS! Wanna eat some CLAMS?"

One of my bands had a melt down over the whole "does Donna get a double" issue. We scored a drummer...and as it goes with drummers, his girlfriend ran the show. She demanded to be a back-up singer in the band or she would take her drummer and go home. One of the few times we actually get paid to play, she demands an equal share of the proceeds...guitar player and piano player (the songwriters) say HELL NO! battle ensues and next thing you know we're looking for a new drummer.

Moral of the story...only work with drummers w/o girlfriends.

Other moral of the story...money makes a mess of just about everything.

Yeah, probably, but I wouldn't complain if someone dumped a truckload of the stuff through my letterbox. The sooner the better if you know what I mean.

Gotta stop in long enough to say, "coolest reference I've
seen on this site in a long time".

Great band.
